   It seems the only way I can get a thumbnail of an image to appear with the feature content slider is when I make it a featured image. When I enable the image as a featured image it changes the banner for the article page.

   Try Roster Slider or Listic Slider WordPress Plugin from SliderVilla. These plugins can scan your post and will show the image from there without adding any image as featured image. They are also having option to include featured image but if you have not added them, then the plugin will scan the added post and will show the first image from the post in the slider. That way you can save time of adding a featured image or may set that later.

   I am using the Listic Slider but it is functioning undependably. It's a great idea, but performance is flaky and support doesn't seem to exist.

   I think the slider is working fine as one can see on demo slidervilla.com/listic. Did you try posting in support forum available at slidervilla.com/support?
