   Is it possible to set up a single product e-commerce site with wp-ecommerce?
   i.e. I want the first page to be the only page that holds a product.

   Yea for sure, I'm only testing myself but I can see that alongside the typical shop features it also gives you the ability to add buy-now buttons anywhere you like - for example you make a new blog post talking about your wonderful product; then click on the "Add Category/Page" icon which gives a menu of options to add to the page - in there it lists all the products you have and allows you to place either a buy-now button; or a full product view anywhere in your post. Looks completely flexible in that way; very cool. Though I am only testing and have not actually used this for real world sales yet...... good luck ..
