This might be a hosting issue (dreamhost) but I just installed a new blog and cannot see wp-content/themes directory at all.
I can only see logs and maildir folders.
I did install the blog right in the website root, could this be the case? My whole website will be just the blog alone, so I did not want to install it into a subfolder.
The blog runs otherwise and I am able to apply any theme I want from the blog own control panel.

This is quite odd, I cannot see any blog related files on my server, I logged in with Total Commander as FTP client, but also with the web based ftp client that cames with dreamhost.
But the blog runs otherwise just fine.

Are you using a blogging package provided by Dreamhost? If so, it's probably the multi-user version of WordPress. I've run into this at another webhost provider (1and1.com). If that's the case, you can't get to the wp-content directory because many users use the same files. If you changed a file you'd be changing everyone's blog.
The solution, assuming Dreamhost provides PHP and MYSQL, is to download the WordPress package and install it on your server space. I did that with 1and1 and it worked very well.
