'wp-config.php' file (8 posts)

When I try to call up http://tarotmeister.com/wp-admin I get a notice saying I don't have a 'wp-config.php' file. When I go to 'Create a File' I get this notice, "The file 'wp-config.php' already exists. If you need to reset any of the configuration items in this file, please delete it first. You may try installing now." When I click on 'installing now' I get my header and the file name "This is somewhat embarrasing, isn't it?"

When I go to the codex file on this, it starts off with "WARNING, before editing this page" This sets off all kinds of bells and whistles in my head and I don't dare try anything. Honestly, I really don't understand the rest of that page.

Can somebody help me here with simple 1-2-3 directions on doing this? I'm working with the "2011" theme.

Okay, I've got the ftp folder for wp-admin but it's one of many files. Do I re-download the whole program or just that file? I could figure out how to download the WordPress program but is that safe for the website I have set up? Or would it just overwrite what I have already. I don't want to lose all the work I've put in on this project.

My biggest problem here is - I can't log on so I can't edit anything.

If I am just to download the wp-admin folder, I haven't the foggiest notion about how to go about it.

    Hi tarotmeister,

It looks like you don't have a clue about what is FTP ;-) but you'll have to upload (and overwrite) what seems to be a corrupt file anyway. Your only chance then is to go to your hosting provider's website and log into your account using an interface like cPanel (or something similar) then to locate & to use the "File Manager" offered with obvious buttons like "Delete", "Upload" and so on.

For your information, uploading and overwriting the "wp-admin" folder doesn't touch to the content of your blog (it's in the database) or to it's look (it's in the "wp-content" folder).

I do know what FTP is; I use FileZilla. But I had first made a file on my c-drive. The problem is, I don't remember how I got it there. Consequently, I don't know how to download a new version, where to get it, or what to do with it once I find it. What FTP is, is about all I DO know about this situation. ;-) So - can I do it in FileZilla? Where do I find the new wp-admin file to replace this bad one?

    Hey tarotmeister,

Cool =) Your best bet is at the top of this very page: the orange square saying Download!

Uncompress the downloaded file and you'll spot the "wp-admin" folder in it rather quickly. In FileZilla, it's exactly this directory you'll use to overwrite the one on your hosting server. And since you're a pro FTPer ;-) you can start with a backup of the "wp-admin" folder you're about to overwrite online by saving it somewhere on your hard drive in the first place (safety first!).

    Good luck
