I tried upgrading to 2.8.4 and received the fatal error message and tried to follow the suggestions in posts on this forum.

I have searched the files and I can't find the wp-config.php anywhere. Can someone point me in the right direction?
    Thanls

The wp-config.php file should be in the directory where your core files and folders are stored.

You can not access it via your admin area, you need to ftp to your installation folder and it should be visible.

Thanks, I found install.php but I can't open it. Is there a video or simple instruction that I can follow to open etc and do the changes as I am afraid I might do something wrong.

    Thanks

I have opened the install file to edit but still can't find the config.php.

    Sorry about all the questions

The wp-config.php should be in the root directory. If it is not, you need to take the wp-config-sample.php, make the appropriate changes and save it as the wp-config.php file.

BUT, before that, what is the fatal message you received? Can you log-in? What is your URL. If it is B4marketing, do not mess with the config file! Also, do not edit the install file.

The fatal message I received when I tried to upgrade was:

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 2357046 bytes) in /wp-includes/http.php on line 1331.

    The url is http://www.m4bmarketing.com

Your site is working fine. Changing the config.php file would only make it stop working.

A fix that has worked for some - open wp-settings.php which is in the root directory. Change 32M on line 13 to 64M. Save and try the upgrade again. Follow the directions for the upgrade if you are doing it manually.

I am in the file manager section, so I take it the setting.php should be there?

    Whooami,

I am reading all the replies, but I can't find the wp-settings.php. Apologise, but this is new to me. I can't find either wp-config.php or settings. I have opened the directory, clicked on wp-admin and can't find the files. Perhaps I am looking in the wrong place.

... clicked on wp-admin and can't find the files.

neither of those files will be found in that directory. Did you LOOK in the directory you were in before you clicked??

Okay, I am obviously in the wrong place. Should I be in file manager or have I got that wrong as well?

    you said this:

I can't find either wp-config.php or settings. I have opened the directory, clicked on wp-admin and can't find the files.

    I said this:

neither of those files will be found in that directory. Did you LOOK in the directory you were in before you clicked??

    What is confusing to you?

    Here it is again :

LOOK in the directory BEFORE you click on wp-admin

Yes whooami I did look in the directory before I clicked. Hey, I get your point with the bolding. I am very slow with the technical side.

Thank you anyway for your help

    Whooami,

    Thanks again

    whooami-

Dude, your replies to M4B were nothing short of rude and arrogant.

If you ever see a question of mine in this forum, do me a favor and don't help.

    @ZGani

    Thanks.

I need help on a similar issue to confirm my domain with ebay's affiliate program, but I'm not going to ask for it here. It's frustrating enough to jump through so many hoops without having to put up with some snot nosed smart-ass like whooami.

M4B, should have told him to screw off after his second reply.

M4B you are welcome. We are all here to learn from and help each other. This is a forum to ask questions about wordpress, be it basic or advance we all desrve to be treated with respect, made to feel at ease and welcome.

No one has the right (no matter how knowledgable they are) to treat others with such arrogance and disrespect.

Frankly the moderators/admin should have put an end to this long time ago as it is not the first time its happened.

Anyways....hope your problem was resolved satisfactory.

    ZGani,

Yes I was able to fix the problem and upgade. To be fair, once I realised I had another directory,it was obvious the file was there. Also I have a pretty thick skin, so nothing much upsets me.
