Does the wp-config file go in the top level or does it need to go into the wp-admin folder?

I've tried lots of things but keep getting an error message and can't create the database. I've tried replacing the single quotes with double quotes, etc. but still no joy.

The error message I get is:

wp-config.php file. I need this before we can get started.

    1. Top=WP root. Not wp-admin.
    2. It does NOT create the database. You create an empty database and WP will populate it with tables and initial data.
    3. The error means it is not where it is supposed to be.

I got tripped up with how to "create a database" at first too. It depends on your web host. It's probably as simple as going into your server control panel and clicking "new SQL database" somewhere in there. You can find instructions on various sites for WP users.

    Hi guys,

Many thanks. Have solved this. I moved to a new server and didn't realise that I had to upload my documents to a named directory.

Anyone else using http://www.streamline.net as their host - you need to upload the WordPress files to htdocs - then it will work.

Yes, on different servers the "root" directory can have different names:
    htdocs
    public_html
    www
    etc.
