WP as CMS, changing posts' behavior (1 post)

I have a site where I'm using WP basically as a CMS. Most of the pages are static pages with the exception of a "news" section which contains pages that are posts. The way that I have it currently set up is that I have my permalinks structure set to "/%category%/%postname%/", each post is categorized as "news", and a static "news" page listing links to the posts (using a custom template for that particular page).

A couple of things that I wish were different:
    1. Archives are currently showing up at http://www.example.com/2007/12/ rather than http://www.example.com/news/2007/12/. How can I change this?
    2. Even though I have that static page at http://www.example.com/news/ that lists the links to the posts, this can also be accessed at http://www.example.com/category/news/ which I would rather not have. I've tried setting the category base option to "/news", but then all of my posts disappeared. How can I change this?

    Thanks.
