  • I did a manual upgrade because the automated ones did not work. (They usually don’t).

Fatal error: Class ‘WP_Theme’ not found in /home/dybxewu/public_html/frontiersites.com/wp-includes/theme.php on line 106

Not sure what to do with this. I have reviewed what I did using the Codex “Upgrading WordPress”

  • Please read this post by another person and how he solved it. You face the same problems. So, just do what he did. You will be successful to have nice update.

Thanks Krishna. However the advice on the other thread was to do a manual update. ie, I downloaded the latest version, unzipped it, and carefully installed via FTP using the instructions provided. This is what I have done, but still ended up with the error noted.

You are still missing at least one critical file. Try re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress.

That means you have done a manual update, as against an one-click automatic installation. Can you deactivate all your plugins, and then revert to the WP default theme twentyeleven? Perhaps that may solve the problem.

Esmi..I just tried going through the manual process with FTP again. When I go to delete the old wp-includes I get an FTP error: Failed to retrieve directory listing. Same with wp-admin.

I have refreshed and the folders show ok, but just keep getting the error.

This is a new site with little on it. I think I might be best to just blow away the WP installation and do a new one with 3.4, I did the upgrade on this one first in case there were issues, so I am a bit worried about what will happen when I do the upgrade with a more established site, and especially upgrading a multisite.

Contact your hosts about this. Ideally, you really do need to remove these folders before uploading the new ones.

I have blown away the site and will reinstall. Part of the issue I think must be with Vodahost who are still on 3.1.1 with Fantastico. Bluehost are already on 3.4! I have contacted VH about this.
Anyway thanks and I will get back if it all turns to custard.

(Later) Just occurred to me that the other thing I could try is upgrading through the versions. This was an upgrade from 3.1.1 to 3.4 and that might have been a step too far.
