• I use Yahoo Professional Business Hosting, and I’ve been running WordPress for quite some time with no problems. A few weeks ago, I started having issues connecting to MySQL with wordpress giving me the generic can’t connect to mysql error page. Since I’ve upgraded to 1.5.1.1, this problem has increased in severity to the poing of my domain being down more often than its up. Every time I go to post something, or someone grabs my rss feed, or visits the site, mysql goes offline and I can’t even administer it via phpMyAdmin. It comes back online after 10 minutes or so. The sites I’m using are http://quicksurf.com/ and http://linux.quicksurf.com/ among a few others on the same domain. My wp-config.php files are configured correctly, and I blew away all the files and pushed up a fresh copy of 1.5.1.1 and ran upgrade.php on all the sites, and for the most part, when mysql is up, it works fine, but as soon as I try to do anything in WP it goes offline. I’m not sure if it’s WP or Yahoo, but I’ve got an email into their customer support to see if there’s anything on their end. Everything has been running like a champ until a few weeks ago when I moved off of 1.5 and went to 1.5.1 then 1.5.1.1. I’ve considered the fact that I may be overloading Yahoo’s MySQL server, but that’s doesn’t seem likely. I’ve only got posts up into around 1600 or so, so it’s not a huge database.

The PHP version and MSQL version are high enough for WP, and WP has been running great up until now. As soon as I can get back into my site, I’ll try to get the exact version of MySQL from phpmyadmin, and I’m not sure how to get the PHP version, but I know its 4 dot something…

    Any help could be appreciated.

    UPDATE: its MySQL 3.23.49

    UPDATE AGAIN: PHP 4.3.6

What plugins do you have running on your site? Always start there.

If you are not able to access your database through phpMyAdmin, then it would seem that the server/service is somehow affected, your web host can better tell you what is going on.

I have no plug-ins running and have never had any running. It’s a virgin install with very minor changes to the default theme (which I copied to another directory and modified to my needs). I’m really at a loss… I’ve also considered that it might be someone trying to spam my comments, but my log files don’t indicate a significant amount of traffic.

Have you checked your database to see if you’ve got overheaded tables? This is more often a problem with phpBB than with WP AFAIK, but it can’t hurt to check. If you have overheaded tables, you should optimize them using phpMyAdmin.

vkaryl – what are overheaded tables? I’m not super familiar with mysql…

Heh – neither am I, just when you look at your db structure in phpMyAdmin, your tables will show a column to the far right – if overheaded, you will see a number of bytes listed in that column beside some of the tables. When I had a problem with one of my phpBB installations, my host (good friend that she is) told me to check that, click on the choice that says “check overheaded” (which places a check mark in the select box next to any table that is overheaded), then in the drop down box, choose “optimize” – and that cleared up my phpBB problem.

I’ve noted sometimes when I look at the dbs for WP, a few of the tables may be overheaded. I’ve not had problems, but I still optimize them. As I said, can’t hurt! If that doesn’t help, you might need to discuss the problem with yahoo support….

hmm… I’ll try to see if I can do that… I have to shut everyone out of the site via file permissions to even do anything, so if you try to hit the site(s) as of saturday at 4:30is AZ time (-0700 GMT), you can’t until I figure out to check for overheaded tables… I’ll restore access shortly.

Ok, things are turned back on… I couldn’t find any overheaded anything, but I did go through and checked, repaired, and optimized every table in mysql. I even went to the main hosting mysql page and ran Yahoo’s DB Repair utility they provide… It doesn’t seem to make any difference… as soon as I turned off file permissions to let the world see the domain, it went off line again within a minute. Does anybody else have any suggestions?

    A better host?

moshu – I’m beginning to think that might be it… I’ve been with Yahoo for years though, and this is the first time I’ve really had any problems with them. I am very frustrated at their very slow customer support though…

I haven’t completely ruled out that it might be something in WP doing it, because this didn’t start until I moved off of WP 1.5… I’ve been methodically going through WP settings in WP and turning stuff on and off to see if it makes any difference, and so far, it hasn’t, so either it’s not a user controllable option or feature doing it, or it’s a fat finger somewhere hosing me, or it’s my host… If I don’t hear from Yahoo Tech support by end of day Monday, then I’ll have not recourse but to find another host… I’d prefer not to do that because everybody and their mother that uses my sites shouldn’t have to go through a hosting and possibly domain change…. That’s a last resort.

and if it really is a WP issue, then changing hosts isn’t going to help with fixing whatever the bug is…

    Thread Starter adrian_bacon

    (@adrian_bacon)

I think I’ve narrowed it down some… MySQL goes offline right after I ping the ping services, so it seems to be related to the rss feed somehow…

    (@adrian_bacon)

I just got an email from my hosts technical support… it looks like something got hosed in the mysql permissions for my account, they’re fixing it now. It’s not a WP issue after all.

    Well, that’s good to hear!
