Works. REALLY works.

Had a client’s site go down twice in Feb 2013 – once by malware, the second through a brute force intrusion which resulted in a bloody hand plastered over their homepage and racial slurs (you know how it goes).

Since installing Better WP Security the site has received over 200 known hack attempts, all of which I was aware of thanks to this plugin…and all of which were unsuccessful. I now use this on all of my client websites and the peace of mind – not to mention effective security it adds – is priceless.

I have had some grief with timthumb when the plugin’s write permissions are set to strict, and locked myself out once with the 404 protection handling, but as long as my IP is whitelisted and you verify plugin compatibility when going through the security checklist, you should be good.
