Like the original poster who inspired the creation of this, I have been having a really hard time trying to simply make a link to an external url appear in a popup box- this should be trivial. In fact, you can apparently do it by adding a class="thickbox" to a link, but it never works for me.
This plugin does work! But- I really want to it to behave like thickbox- make it modal, and gray out the window in the background. How hard would it be to do this?

Thank you for the review. It sounds like his isn't the right plugin for you. Opening content within a new browser window is not the same process as opening content within an absolutely-positioned div with a translucent overlay within the same browser window. Each of these requires a totally different approach.

You could try searching the plugins directory for a suitable lightbox plugin. I'm not sure whether Shadowbox js would work for you as I have not used it, but it looks like it has some good features: http://wordpress.org/plugins/shadowbox-js/
