Will WP install run using IIS at http://localhost? If so how? Does it need Windows server (can't see why)

No idea about using IIS, but stopping the IIS process and installing xampp will do the job.

I run WordPress locally on IIS, but it does require separately installing PHP, MySQL, and anything else you may need (say phpMyAdmin). podz's suggestion is best for those looking to avoid a lot of manual configuring and whatnot. However, if your interested there's certainly documentation to be found on the topic. For example:

I'm running a WP test blog for dev using xampp and setup was a snap, however when I go to access the site on another computer in the network, the site is available but all styling is gone?!

    Any ideas??

truenorth, you're either using http://127.0.0.1 or http://localhost as the blog and WordPress addresses (Options > General), and this is causing other PCs on the network to look "locally," that is at themselves, for the file(s). Instead, use the IP your PC is assigned on your local network (usually something like 192.168.0.2).

    Thanks, that did the trick!
