WordPress.org design- what plugins-customizations? (6 posts)

Hi, I chose WordPress based on what I saw here on WordPress.org. However, I can't find how to do many of the same things on my site! So it occurred to me that it would probably be a great starting point for anyone trying WordPress to know how WordPress.org does it :)

So could we please get a list of plugins/customizations applied to this site, so that we all can get a leg up on our initial work? I particularly need to use tags/keywords as header navigation within categories, and I think that modifying the Description/etc. used in Plugins would be the place to start. If I could only find a plugin, or figure out how myself :)

To save typing, here's the customization planner that I'm using, broken down by template. It would be a great help just to see some cliff notes on what plugins and changes were used.

Thanks very much for any help!

For starters. This forum is not powered by WP.
This whole site is also NOT powered by WP, except the development blog: http://wordpress.org/development/

I am not understanding entirely what your question is.
The look (layout/design) of your WP powered blog should be defined by the theme you are using.
    Theme_Development
    Blog_Design_and_Layout
    Template_Hierarchy
...good places to start understanding WP.

Wait, wait. WordPress.org is not powered by WordPress, or did you mean that it was WordPress MU?

If not, can you tell me what WordPress.org does run on?

As to the question, thanks for the links. I'll revise my list to match what I find there.

I always mean exactly what I am saying. Not WP - means not WP. Period.

I am telling this just looking at the source code. You could do the same.
If you want more details - ask the owner.
Also, the forum is NOT WP, for sure. Everybody knows it is http://bbpress.org.

Thank you for the information, I am looking at the source for WordPress.org's main page, but it doesn't say "Hey, this site is powered by <whatever>". I see that it's using divs, not tables, and lists styled by CSS, all of which matches up with what I know of WordPress. The only possible reference I see is to a css sheet from Mediawiki, but there's a lot more to WordPress.org.

So how would I have known? Anyways, who the heck makes web software and doesn't use it for their own site as a showcase?

You need to learn to read more carefully!
I said: WP is used for the BLOG part of this site. Scroll up and click on the "BLOG".

Having divs and CSS - that should be the standard for any website :)

As for not using WP for showcase... before talking too much you should understand:
    a) this is a volunteer forum and we don't have anything to do with the devs (so don't ask questions directed to the owner/developer)
    b) smart people adhere to the principle of "the right tool for the task", which means for non-blog sites you shouldn't use a blogging software
    c) ask questions about what you want to do, not about what other people do
