Hi there, I’m running WP 2.6.3 on my own website. I want to use this plugin bad but there seems to be a problem with my API key. I’ve made a WordPress.com account (but not a blog) so I have an API key but after entering the key to activate the WordPress.com Stats plugin I get an error: ‘Missing API Key. The WordPress.com Stats Plugin is not working because it needs to be linked to a WordPress.com account.’ Re-entering the WordPress.com key doesn’t help. I’m confused here why I need a WordPress.com account to have an API key in the first place, and secondly why this plug-in activation doesn’t fly. I’ve Askimet running perfectly… please advise.

It should work out of the box.
Did you finished the registration process at wordpress.com ? (verify mail)
Did you copy and pasted the EXACT API number (no spaces or strings)?
if yes, try uploading the plugin agian...
and for your question "WHY? " - that is because this plugin uses the wordpress.com servers to generate the stats..

I'm using WP 2.6.3 and WordPress.com Stats is 'Compatible up to: 2.6-alpha'... maybe that's the problem.

I'm having a problem getting this plugin to recognize my handy-old API key, in a fresh install of WP 2.6 just upgraded to 2.7.

WordPress.Com Stats plugin recognizes my API (same API that is running Akismet) and says it's already associated with another blog (my WP.com blog and a couple other self-hosted). I click "Add", and it says "Missing API Key". I re-enter it > try again > same thing.

    Anyone else seeing this?

I have a similar problem. When I reactivate the WordPress.com-Stats after upgrading to WordPress 2.7, I'm instructed to enter the API-key again. When I do this (the same API-key as Akismet uses) I get a big fat, red error:

Error from last API Key attempt:
    parse error. not well formed

I love this stats-plugin, and I'm almost addicted to it. It also worked like a charm before the WP-upgrade. Can someone help me? Thanks!

I have the exact same problem still, only now I have upgraded to WP 2.8.4. - I am calling wp_footer, and have done all the time, but I still get the same error:

Error from last API Key attempt:
    parse error. not well formed
