   I don't think you should have to sign up for another blog, just to get spam-protection for my other blog.

   their should be another way to get an akismet key.

   There are other options for spam protection for your WordPress blog aside from Akismet.

   Is highly recommended.
   A search at http://www.wp-plugins.net for spam plugins will produce 52 plugins.

   I think it's a bit silly too, but I understand it. They simply tied Akismet tightly to wordpress.com's existing account system. Anyway, it's not like you have to *use* your wordpress.com blog.

   Maybe they should start up a budget plan, pay $5/year and get your own key regardless of where your blog is...
