Hi,
I'm trying to activate the Akismet plugin, but it says I need an API key?
I checked my dashboard, and there is no "Profile" or "My Account" link.
I went to WordPress.com and entered my email in the invite screen, but I haven't gotten anything.
What's the deal?
We don't really know, sorry, because we don't deal here with anything related to wordpress.com.

Download Flock from the link on wordpress.com, and request an activation while using Flock as your browser.

Every user of WordPress.com gets a unique API key they can use to access a number of services. This key should be as kept as secret as your password � don’t share it with anybody.
To find your key go to your dashboard and then click on “Profile� (or “My Account�) and you should see a sentence that says “Your WordPress.com API key is:� followed by a string of 12 letters and numbers. There you have it! You can copy and paste that string to any place where it is asked for by a service you want to use.

I have the same problem.
Following the instructions that estjohn posted doesn't help at all since those were the instructions we are questioning.
And posting here will not help you, since this forum has nothing to do with wordpress.com.

Okay, is this some kind of joke?
First off, I already saw the faq, there is no "Profile" or "My Account" on my dashboard.
Secondly, what do you mean you don't deal with anything related to WordPress.com? WordPress.com is all about WordPress!
Is there some kind of wierd hokery going on around here?
Why would WordPress promote a plugin in their codex site and their forum ...
Okay I didn't see that thread last night.
I agree with TechGnome's comment.
I'm not downloading Flock. A new application is the last thing I need, I'm trying to simplify my life with a spam blocker, not add more complication to it.
If anyone knows how this is supposed to work without "buying car" please let me know.
RogerUsh and Whereiworksucks - You have to get the invite in the email (it can take a few days to get an invite from wordpress.com, it is not instant), set up a wordpress.com blog there on wordpress.com. Then you have a dashboard link.
As moshu said, this is a wordpress.com blog and this has nothing to do with wordpress.org

WordPress.org is here for the standalone, downloadable, install yourself version of WordPress.
WordPress.com is for the hosted, limited in what you can do because of the setup version of WordPress.
These forums are for WordPress.org, not .com
The fact the software is similar (it is NOT the same) does not change the fact that we do not support wordpress.com on these forums. Hopefully that site will get it's own forums. Until then, if you are in WordPress.com you have an API key and if you are not, you do not.

Then I don´t know why is Akismet plugin default in new WordPress v.2.00 distribution. It is for nothing if I need API key for money or no?
wordpress.com is now open for signups; no more invites required, just head on over to
http://wordpress.com/signup/
As wordpress.com is not supported here, I'm closing this thread.
