   I've followed the instructions for having my blog display in Japanese and the end result is that only one button on the edit post page is the only thing that displays in Japanese.

   This one button implies that I've got the files in the right place and the language setting in the config set properly yet nothing else is translated.

   Do I need to get someone to translate the rest or am I doing something wrong?

   Sounds like the theme is properly internationalized but missing all or part of Japanese translations.
   Theme can take WordPress core translation (and translate common string like button labels).
   Which theme are you using?
