   Hi,

   I would like to develop my new WordPress website in a hidden URL, e.g. http://www.example.com/dev/

   So that means anyone typing http://www.example.com would not see the website. Is that possible?

   You've already answered your own question - install WP in a sub-folder. Then, when you are ready to allow WP to take over the root domain see Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory
