WordPress used for something other than blog? (20 posts)

Has anyone seen WordPress used for something other than a blog (if so, link please?)? I just started working with WordPress...literally, 5 minutes ago. I'm going to try to use it as a news posting system for the website of my college's newspaper.

I already made some software called CuteNews work for my purposes, but there's no database back-end. That's what attracted me to WordPress. So hopefully I'll be able to make WordPress work for my needs. Otherwise I'll have to go back to CutePHP.

At Teacher Education we use it for an educational resource. It has the characteristics of a blog but is not used in that way. Articles and opinions are added sporadically.

leythers.co.uk is not a blog, but it is a heavily hacked beta version of wp 1.5.

I'm currently moving over to 1.5 gold and utilising its templates feature, which should give me a non-hacked, easy-to-manage web site.

1.5 has just made wp into a very powerful tool for non-blog type sites.

you can also check davidchaits review site which looks more like a ebay site than a blog.

the only limitation is your own ideas I think - you an use it as a news project, as a blog, as an art forum whatever you really want. I think it's only the know how that is lacking that would enable someone do something with it.

otherwise you coudl try out of the box solutions like e107, and CuteNews, mambo whatever else. It doesn't sound ike you're after a CMS however, and it really depends on what you want to do with it. There's another site somwhere here where the user created a local news website for local gossip.

CHAITGEAR is actually very close to what I want to accomplish with my site. I'd be very interested to see how they set up their index.php page,

After trying several CMS packages I decided to use WP as such. Still experimenting though. http://www.cartapacio.com

This is not even remotely blog like:

    http://moneyterms.co.uk/

And this is very different from a personal blog (multiple authors, large number of categories):

Although there are some "blog-like" aspects (sermons and events), this primarily uses pages to make the site:

For a newspaper site, you ought to check out the Identification Bands theme.

    http://www.eretzvaju.org/identification-bands

The "blog" content (or whatever) goes in just one of four columns. I'm using it to (slowly) convert my real estate website http://www.tom-hanna.com/testindex.php to use the same theme as my real estate news blog. (Work in progress.)

This may not be too different, but I have a blog and a gallery of sorts. I didn't want a traditional gallery, I wanted like a next/previous photo page thing with comments underneath. (I really wanted Flickr, but no custom layout and my site is about CELEBRITY fashion.)

I haven't finished customizing it yet, hopefully. But I'm including only the blog section categories to be on the main page. I hope I can get it to look like the gallery is not just like a blog. I'd like the archives to be one page only, but the main blog 10 or so. :-\

If anyone can give me tips, thanks, but I'm also just posting for a perspective.

About the forum idea, I like it. There's an AWESOME template that looks like a forum at http://alexking.org (I believe that's the address).

The new pages feature lets Word Press be almost any kind of regular site. It's a good idea, because there's fairly less work.

Now, I wonder; could Word Press be used to set up a store?

I plan to use mine for a family history publication for my family plus there will be catagories for my sister to put in stories about her travels around North America in her 5th wheel. and other family members wanted to just generally post their thoughts about whatever. But, my plan was for a purely private publication. Now you can view my whole websites through it.
I don't think there are any real rules about what you do if you can do it then do it.
