Probably "crunching" adds for one uploaded picture additional pictures (up 17!) with diferrent sizes: 135x135 - 300x400
and increase total size twice
it's ok situation?

WP only creates a maximum of 3 extra images as defined in Settings -> Media. Any additional images may be post thumbnails defined within your theme.
