I know that WP is a CMS and not limited for blogging however all or most of the templates are for bloggers. There are not any examples nor default settings, templates to get you started unless you want to blog. In the gallery of WP sites, I do see custom templates which makes the point, WP has to be customized to be used for something other than blogging.

    Please help.

There are actually many templates that will allow you to treat your site less like a blog. Search for news, photo, or magazine themes.

Some of the ones I like best are woothemes, where you can filter by magazine-type themes.

"There are actually many templates that will allow you to treat your site less like a blog. . . "

I think you helped make my point. WP orientation, for the most part is still stuck on blogging although it is capable of much more. Blogging is primarly, anything else you will need to have custom made :( .

    That would be because that's what WordPress is. "WordPress is a state-of-the-art publishing platform with a focus on aesthetics, web standards, and usability". However;

What You Can Use WordPress For

"WordPress started as just a blogging systems, but has evolved to be used as full content management system and so much more through the thousands of plugins, widgets, and themes, WordPress is limited only by your imagination. (And tech chops.)"

where do you want to start?

that most(?) tutorials are for bloggers probably reflects the idea that people working with / setting up cms are expected to have a deeper knowledge of programming.

My point is made, to try to find a method on utilizing WP for non blogging, you turn to Google. The self help is not contained within the WP site.

I am trying to demonstrate to a group here that WP is not just for blogging and you do not have to hire or WP template guru to have a WP powered site. However, there is little information if any at all that helps the newbie to configure WP for No Blogging. They do not want a blog format they want to be oriented to "how to" produce content like: news, magazine format.

To point to a news template or news plugin, shows that it is not understood. Current WP templates and plugins assumes you are a blogger wanting to extend WP.

CMS is a loosely used term, it includes also blogging. I'll state my point again, WP can be used as a no blogging format for managing content if you are willing to have templates customized.

I disagree. Varying WP primarily is driven by the use of themes and plugins. Given the right theme for your needs, WP does a fine job in most cases.

Any configuration or customization is based on your need to differentiate from the out-of-the-box theme, not based on whether it's a "blog" or other website.

My point is made, to try to find a method on utilizing WP for non blogging, you turn to Google. The self help is not contained within the WP site.

You've made no point at all. Why are you taking the stance that WordPress should act like a CMS? WordPress is a blogging/publishing software. It is not a CMS software. Your position is rendered untenable by that fact alone. That being said, quite clearly you can use it for a CMS. I think most everyone that has spent any time using WordPress knows that. You don't have to demonstrate it for anyone.

I'll state my point again, WP can be used as a no blogging format for managing content if you are willing to have templates customized.

Yep'. That's right. You're just stating facts there, not making a point. I'm curious as to why you seem to be disgruntled because a blogging software isn't a CMS software. If you desire a pure out of the box CMS, go get one. Or you can take the time to acquire the knowledge to turn WordPress into a CMS.

"WordPress themes are for blogs - Want for CMS general use"

You are correct. WordPress is blogging software, not a CMS. Clearly you wish it be a CMS, and not blogging software. That pretty much sums it up before you even get started. Can you use it for a CMS? Of course.

Solution: Devote some time to learning how to do that, from others that have done it. I think your contention that WordPress should provide you with instructions on how do that, is sort of a stretch. It just happens to be a bonus that you can find some of that information located here in the forums.

I operate several CMS and want to learn how I may without having to modify a template, can start evaluating WP for content management and not for blogging

Just to recap... WordPress IS blogging software by nature. Not an out of the box CMS. Why would believe you can evaluate it as a CMS the way it is? Seems to me that you would like an apple to be an orange.

I know that WP is a CMS and not limited for blogging

Your statement is not correct. WordPress is a Blogging platform that can be modified to function as a CMS. It is not a CMS.

Perhaps not completely understanding the terms may be fueling the source of your confusion.

Best wishes and good luck to you!
