    What exactly are the advantages of downloading and using the WordPress software with a web hosting company versus just using the web-based wordpress.com blogging site?

    It depends on your needs.
    At wp.com you cannot edit the templates and cannot use other themes than what they offer – in other words, your customization possibilities are limited. But it’s free.
    Having your own install, you need a domain and host… but your limit is only your imagination 🙂
