    Hi

I’m a long time user of this great plugin. I have tested almost all popular related posts plugin and finally I picked this one and its working great to date.

But since a few days I have noticed that the plugin is losing its USP. It was known to be the smallest and minimal plugin. It used to do what it supposed to do but now you guys are inserting too much unnecessary stuff in the plugin.

First the addition of themes, then statistics and then promoted content, etc.

And now the thing which forced me to create this topic is the addition of a new table in wordpress database. I just noticed that the latest version of this plugin added a new table “wp_wp_rp_tags” in wordpress database.

I have ditched a few related posts plugin in past because they used to insert their own table in WP database and now the same thing is being done by this plugin.

Please guys don’t make this plugin bloated. Keep it simple.

  • Hi, thanks for the feedback!

I assure you that when we develop the plugin in a certain direction, we do everything possible to keep it as slim as possible. For example, when our users wanted better recommendations—that table was the smallest thing we could do to ensure that.
In short: keeping the plugin “lean” is definitely something we think about all the time.

^^ Thanks for the answer. But wouldn’t adding an extra table increase database size? I’m sure the table size will tend to increase each and every day.

Please provide an option in plugin settings to enable/disable the table creation in database. I was happy with the older functionality of plugin.

    Hello,

Before this, i’m using yarpp to show related post plugin but i want to try another plugi because the plugin adding extra table in database and the thumbnail cannot customize.

So i try another plugin and today i found wordpress related post. I like this plugin because the plugin have statistic and can customize the thumbnail.

But when i see in database the plugin adding extra table “wp_rp_tags”. The best thing is, this plugin installed in 5 hours only but make many rows (1,319 rows) than yarpp (846 rows).

Can you remove the extra table?

Other question. Can i know what is it promoted content means? When i visit related-posts.com, it said that we can make money with it but how?

    Naziman

^^ Its occupying 1.5 MB space of database containing 30,000+ rows here.

It would be great if the developers of this plugin release a new version like “WordPress Related Posts Lite” which provides only required features, no thumbnails, no database table, nothing else.

I dont want to ditch this nice plugin but if they keep continue adding extra unwanted features to the plugin, I’ll have to look for another plugin.

    Hi!
We added the table to vastly improve recommendations which the majority of our users asked for. You can download the old versions of the plugin here: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-23-related-posts-plugin/developers/
(anything before 2.0 is with the bad recommendations).

@naziman, if you have enough pageviews and the right kind of content you can potentially earn money with the plugin.

    Best,
    Rok

^^ Yes. I know that older versions are still available for download but would it be a wise idea to use an older version of plugin? Will you keep the older versions updated with security and other kind of fixes?

We won’t but they work well already. They just don’t have all the cool features the new ones have. 🙂

^^ Thats sad. I really hope that you will find out another way to improve the plugin functionality rather than adding extra table to database. 🙂

Just a little problem which I found today. Related Posts plugin has started using an attribute “position” in the list. Its used in following format:

    <ul class=”related_post wp_rp” style=”visibility: visible”><li position=”0″>…

But its causing errors while validating the page in W3 Validator:

    http://validator.w3.org/

My blog was 100% error free but now that position attribute is causing 1 error in all posts pages.

Can you please fix the issue so that it doesnt cause any error while validating the page?

    Thanks.

    ===========

    ERROR Details:

Line 284, Column 153: there is no attribute “position”

    …le=”visibility: visible”><li position=”0″><a href=”…

You have used the attribute named above in your document, but the document type you are using does not support that attribute for this element. This error is often caused by incorrect use of the “Strict” document type with a document that uses frames (e.g. you must use the “Transitional” document type to get the “target” attribute), or by using vendor proprietary extensions such as “marginheight” (this is usually fixed by using CSS to achieve the desired effect instead).

This error may also result if the element itself is not supported in the document type you are using, as an undefined element will have no supported attributes; in this case, see the element-undefined error message for further information.

How to fix: check the spelling and case of the element and attribute, (Remember XHTML is all lower-case) and/or check that they are both allowed in the chosen document type, and/or use CSS instead of this attribute. If you received this error when using the <embed> element to incorporate flash media in a Web page, see the FAQ item on valid flash.

I just wish to tell that I have returned to old version, it has add about 1 milion rows in that table (site has about 200 000) because of this constant use of database server load was always very high about 9-10 from 8 and before this new version load was below 1 …

Hi, we are using related post plugin, but we don’t know how this plugin is working.

Please let us know the working process of related post plugin.

    Thanks,

    Hey Inderjeet!

Well, after you install & activate the plugin, visit your plugin settings to set how you want your related posts to look like. If not sure, visit one of your blogposts, scroll to the end of it and see how they look like. Make sure that to click on the ‘Refresh page’ button after you make any modifications in the plugin settings menu.

The plugin picks up relevant, related articles from your own blog and puts them at the end of your every blogpost, so your readers can stay on your blog and read more about the same field of interest.

Let me know if you need any more help or if you have any other questions — I’ll gladly help!

Take care & have a nice day!

    Best,
    Silvo

    silvoslaf,

We are not getting the latest related posts for a particular post.

We want to know how this plugin is working , so that we only want latest related post and not the old ones.

    Thanks,
    Inderjeet

Hey Inderjeet, any way we could get a link to the blog in question, so we could take a closer look at it? That would really help us a lot!

As for how our plugin works — well, our aggregator indexes your blog and recommends your relevant articles that might be associated with your every particular blogpost. If you wish to only recommend your recent blogposts, go to your plugin settings and set the paramater “Only show posts from the last 1/3/12/unlimited months” to the value you prefer. This way, only those blogposts published in the desired time-gap will be recommended, so you can avoid older ones. Here’s a screenshot for easier navigation: http://awesomescreenshot.com/055168po4e

Let me know what’s your blog and how it goes! Would love to see the results! 🙂

    Take care!

    silvoslaf,
