I have been using wordpress for my aviation and internet blog and has been pleased with it than any other cms. But there are some issues. The forum that wordpress supports is really not good. It can be called a forum for the sake of calling it. Also, services like wp supercache should become part of core allowing the best cache invalidation and so on.

There are many forums that work with WP .. bbPress is but one option. I like it, because of it's simplicity! There are many others though which approach more traditional type forums simple:press is one I've used before!
Caching is also going to remain a plugin option, IMHO. Different folks have different caching needs, different setups, etc. It's not a one size fits all proposition.
