   wampserver 2.1
   Apache 2.2.17
   Php 5.3.4
   Mysql 5.1.53
   Wordpress 3.1.3

   installed wordpress on localhost (c:\wamp\www\wordpress)
   can access the blog, and make posts
   want to import wordpress blog
   went to tools > import > wordpress

   hangs on "Install importer"
   also, I activated askimet, obtained key from website
   and when i click on enter key, it hangs, then does nothing.

   please help. Thanks.

   Sounds like your local server is being blocked from contacting external sites. By your firewall perhaps?

   Well, I turned off firewall completely and tried again, in chrome and ie. neither worked (still hangs).

   Whatever it is, it's specific to your local network or local server.

   still not resolved. probably something in apache, but can't figure it out.

   I think my problem is similar to this: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/cannot-install-plugins-unexpected-http-error?replies=4

   if I edit the code for plugin-install.php to make it NOT work, and then click to install the wordpress importer, the window immediately shows that something is broken.

   I then changed the wait period to 120 seconds. it just hangs, and hangs, and hangs. then... VOILA!

   *nothing*

   Just wanted to say, I am able to install the importer by downloading and manually installing the plugin.

   still does not resolve the akismet problem.

   still hangs.
