WordPress not appearing correctly on IE

start by (re)moving this line:
<script type="text/javascript" src="js/common.js" ></script>
from where it is now, to a location for instance just before </head>

despite those validation errors, not too much of a difference between IE7 and Firefox11.0

the menu background is missing in IE7, and the menu is shifted down;
the same endless gallery in the sidebar on the right;
hardly any content on the left.

can you provode screenshots to illustrate the problem?
