• WordPress MU Multisite Network Seo One Install or several?

If I have a http://www.mysite.com and set up a WP Multisite with subdomains as:
    http://www.location1.mysite.com and
    http://www.location2.mysite.com

Is it better to set up One WP Install or Multiple Installs under each subdomains considering the following factors.

    1) flexibility of localized add management. I want to be able to place google adsense codes and other adds based on location in sub-domain only, not sitewide. Location 2 adsense adds only on http://www.location2.mysite.com and location 1 adds on http://www.location1.mysite.com.

    2) Seo factor. With multible subdomains and wordpress installs for each subdomain, will this have a negative effect on performance or is it better to have multiple WP installs because each subdomain will have its own WP and database and thus load faster?

You can do all that on a single site, and easier is really dependent on your skills.

SEO factor… Subdomains are seen as separate sites as far as that goes.

As for speed … depends on your server. I get better results with MultiSite after 4 sites.

Ipstenu, thank you for a quick reply.

As far as I understand, one install is much easier to manage. But with each additional sub-domain the database grows larger. If I have 15 sub-domain running and each of the 15 sites allows users to sign up, the database could get very messy and thus affect speed and performance.

Do you think it would be possible to set them up separately, each having its own database, and then network them so that they can be managed from one control panel?

The database size differential between 15 sites on a network and 15 totally separate sites is … not an issue. The difference for speed and performance is negligible. I mean, WordPress.com is running it 😉

Yes, you can have 15 separate sites managed by one CP, I believe that’s WP Hive.

If they are all going to be subdomain sites, ad you’re asking which is better for SEO – multisite or single installs, Google does not care and cannot tell.

Ipstenu, thank you. The Hive is another great option I was not aware of. Thanks for mentioning it.

Andrea_r much appreciated. My SEO concern is related to speed since google is now considering site loading speed of each domain as part of its SEO formula. Multiple sites running on one database may not be a issue in most cases. However, if each site allows for user signup and I have 15 such sites running on one database as part of the WP network, the database may get pretty large and may cause sites to load much slower thus have negative affect on SEO?

My thought was that running them on separate databases will have less of a burden on each database thus load faster?

    Negligible. Really.

    Non existent in my experience.

I used to run separate single site 4 blogs off the same DB (different prefixes) and it was just as fast as 4 separate DBs.
