• OK. This is going to sound very WIERD. This post is goign to sound like it has nothing to do with WordPress, but in 2 months of keeping track of my problem, this is the best I can come up with. Please read on, and give me some feedback on what you think…

    ###

SITUATION: When working on our laptops (mine = OS-X, wife’s = XP) via wireless connection, we occasionally would get dropped. Our wireless network would “vanish”. Only way we could get back on, was to reboot the Netgear wireless router. This has gone on for a few months, somedays worse than others. I can spend all day on my wired desktop computer with no problems. But when it goes down from one of the laptops, it takes down my entire network.

MY EFFORTS: I’ve made several calls to Comcast, my cable internet provider, they see no trouble. I’ve made several calls to Netgear, who have had me change MTU (i think – something about packet sizes) settings a couple times, with no success. My router’s firmware is current. They see no trouble on their end. I didn’t even bother calling Vonage, because I completely removed the Vonage box and phone for two whole days and saw no improvement in my problem.

CONCLUSIONS: During the past few months, I’ve started working with WordPress. I have close to a dozen installations. It would appear, that I have the problem ONLY when I’m in the admin area of SOME of my blogs. I can’t put my finger on what the problem is. It does it on my Mac. It does it on my Dell. It does it in IE, Firefox, and Safari. It ONLY happens when I’m in the admin area of WordPress, but only on 3 of my dozen or so blogs.

All of the blogs but 3 are on the exact same hosting platform (apache, freebsd). I can go into admin areas of anything else all day long with no problems. So it’s not a “secure” thing. I’m going completely bonkers with this.

HELP! Anybody! Have you ever seen anything like this??

  • I have wireless and 3 machines, 3 NDS and a PSP running through it with no problems.

    Router getting hot?
Checked the event logs in XP?

no, the router doesn’t get hot, and the lights even continue to blink or stay on as if nothing is wrong. My networks just dissapears, and none of my 3 machines can see it. I tell you what, it’s probably the most strange and irritating problem I’ve had, and the only common denominator I’m finding is WordPress on 3 of my installations! Is it possible a misconfiguration on my webserver would thow something back at my router and knock it out of whack?

I’m the Mac guy in the family, and I’m not sure how to check event logs in XP. Is that something that’s easily explained here? If not, I’ve got a guy at work who I could ask tomorrow.

How about phones? Do you have cordless phones in your house? My mom has this same problem – it’s because of her cordless phones. If your cordless phones are 24GHz, then they’ll knock out your wireless connection every time the phone rings. Any other GHz will do – just as long as they aren’t 24.

    Comcast doesn’t know anything anyway…

There should be an event log to look at but I wouldn’t look at XP’s I would look at the router’s. There should be one, you might have to dig around a little to find it. Look at it, if there’s anything strange then investigate that. I am thinking there is a certain command the router is executing that is screwing with it but without seeing this happen, it’s kinda hard to diagnose your problem. Again, I am almost sure you have a router problem… Check those logs…

Well, this doesn’t help you probably, but Mambo (not Joomla) used to completely freeze and/or bluescreen some (not all) people’s computers when you exited the admin area by clicking on the x to shut the window. They never found that bug, but I have experienced it a couple of times, on one installation only.

So my best guess is, that WP might crash your wireless’ online configuration in that special combination.

I had looked into the phone thing too… I had heard about the 2.4ghz issue… And mine IS 2.4 ghz. and it IS stationed right next to the router, modem, and vonage box, all on the same shelf. However, we’ve never had a problem when the phone rings, and just to be sure, I removed the phone and vonage box from the system, and unplugged the power to both, for a day or two. Still lost the router whenever I went into the wordpress admin area.

I’ll see what I can find out about the logs, lleger, and go from there. My IT guy will be here in an hour, and I’ll ask if he knows how to find those.

I’m at the office, is it possible to log into my router from here? Or only from the other side at home?

    Farns

Yes, you can log into a router from outside the network… just get the ip address…

Assuming the router allows such things. Mine, for instance, has to be explicitily told to take logins from the external/WAN interface.

As you might guess, there are some risks to opening up the admin interface to the internet side.

I TOO IS HAVING A THE SAME PROBLEM.

i have a dlink wireless router, and my pc, altho desktop, is running wirelessly. i notice whenver im tinkering with my wordpress, i get disconnected every now and then. only when im on wordpress.

Thank god, I’m not alone! At home, I have a Netgear wireless Router, and almost every time I access WPs admin area, my wireless goes offline. Have to reset router and dsl modem. At the office, we use a Siemens Router, and the problem does not occur. Must have to do something with Netgear, I think. Will propably phone them tomorrow.
