I've installed multisite on a subdomain, let's say sub.main.com . I need to be able to create other "sub" domains in parallel, one.main.com, two.main.com, etc.... Is this possible without the wordpress install on the main domain? I can't seem to figure this out. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

No, not really. You MIGHT be able to get away with using domain mapping plugins, but it's best if you install it on main domain.
