WordPress Installation Keeps Dying (4 posts)

    One of my wordpress installations (2.7) on my vps, the busiest one, keeps dying, in that I get a blank page on the front end and back end, or sometimes a prompt to download a php file when in the admin.

    No other parts of the site are affected and my other installations of wordpress on the vps keep running fine.

    It started two weeks ago, happened once, happened once again a week later, now it is happening fairly regularly, like several times a day. The only way I know of bringing the site back is to restart the container, then it might go down again within minutes, or not for many hours.

    The techs at my host say just at the moment it went down on one occasion this was in the error log for apache:

    [Mon Apr 27 21:33:40 2009] [error] [client 125.167.254.185] PHP Warning: call_user_func_array() [<a href='function.call-user-func-array'>function.call-user-func-array</a>]: First argument is expected to be a valid callback, 'rsd_link' was given in /var/www/vhosts/mysite.com/httpdocs/wp-includes/plugin.php on line 339, referer: http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8&amp;sourceid=navclient&amp;gfns=1&amp;q=afdafadsfa

    I have OSSEC installed on the vps and when the problems start I get hundreds of these alerts

    Received From: vps->/var/log/httpd/error_log
    Rule: 30104 fired (level 12) -> "Apache segmentation fault."
    Portion of the log(s):

    [Wed Apr 29 21:50:35 2009] [notice] child pid 15433 exit signal Segmentation fault (11)

    Because the errors messages were about rsd_link and wlwmanifest I checked that and realised I had removed the calls to those things by putting this in header.php

    <?php remove_action('wp_head', 'rsd_link'); ?>
    <?php remove_action('wp_head', 'wlwmanifest_link'); ?>

    So I thought there was some plugin that required them and was failing because I had removed those calls.....so I put them back, I allowed the rsd_link and wlwmanifest calls to appear in the HEAD, but the problem is still there, I still get blank pages of death.

    are you using a search widget? or some kind of search plugin?

    what plugins and widgets are you using?

    systematically disable widgets and plugins.

    Not a widget, just the Search Unleashed plugin from Urban Giraffe, that hasn't been updated in a while though, longer than two weeks I think.
