WordPress Hit Counter is a gambling blogroll hack (3 posts)

I was apalled to download the #1 link when searching for a counter plug-in, and have it put a gambling blogroll on my client's site. Words can't begin to describe what a complete meltdown this was for me. Maybe I am naive, but in two years of developing web sites with WordPress, I really thought if the plug-in was provided on WordPress.org that it was most likely safe, or someone would have removed it!

HERE IS THE LINK FOR THE OFFENDING PLUG-IN
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-hit-counter/

AUTHOR OF THE PLUG IN: Gary-adam Shannon

HERE IS A DETAILED THREAD FROM MORE KNOWEDGEABLE FOLKS THAN I, AND IT HAS GONE ON FOR AT LEAST TWO WEEKS NOW:

However, other than deleting the plug-in, and in WP Admin - Edit Links - deleting the Blogroll gambling link, I have no clue what else to do. I can't remotely implement the fixes suggested in the prior link.

Wanted to at least put a warning out there, but WordPress.org really needs to take down this plug-in!

I've sent in a notification to wordpress.org pointing to both this topic and the original one.

    Hi Allegro51

I've been through the code and removed offending sites that had found their way into the scripts.

Everything looks clean now and I will be posting a update soon

    Cheers
