Support » Everything else WordPress » WordPress for blogging forum events?

  • Hello

I need a fast, scalable PHP/MySQL solution that would have two main sections:

    • a basic blogging tool, so that the site owners can write articles and announce upcoming events to which registered users can sign up. A calendar should also be displayed on the frontpage so users know what’s coming up in the next few weeks
    • a forum where users can talk with each other, and also send private messages to one or more users. I was told to check out bbPress since it’s a WordPress plug-in, and I also like FluxBB for its speed. Either way, the forum must have solid anti-troll features (experience shows that banning IP’s and e-mails isn’t good enough, and must also support bayesian filtering + community-based monitoring.)

    Nice add-on’s would be…

    1. to display the list of connected users on one side of the frontpage
    2. let users print a name tag (with their ID as barcode for easier identification)that they can bring to outings

Before I invest time checking out WordPress further, if you’ve built sites that have the above features, would you says WordPress is a good solution?

    Thank you.

PS: I notice that this forum has no WYSIWYG editor, and no Preview feature. Is this bbPress?

  • Is this bbPress?

Yes – albeit a customised version.

I wouldn’t recommend FluxBb at the moment. I used it for quite a while on one of my sites (after PunBB changed ownership) but all development on Flux appears to have stalled. I finally abandoned it about 3 months ago in favour of bbPress.

Perhaps BuddyPress would be more suitable for your needs?

Why not just use Mingle and the Mingle Forum and for your site owners to add their own posts, an easy way to accomplish that is with the TDO mini forms setup.

I do all those things and more on multiple sites.. for business and for individuals. the beauty of wordpress is that you’ve got so many outstanding plugins that you can integrate and get pretty much anything.

Here is one that accomplishes a good portion of what you want. I did this in about.. an hour or so.. it uses mingle, mingle forums, tdo mini forms. private message for wordpress and a few other small but cool plugins to accomplish . there is also a superior calendar plugin that allows site owners to add their events to the calendar and display it that I’ve added on other sites.. that might be what you’re looking for.

I love buddy press but to be honest the limitations that it requires with regard to changing out the themes is something that I don’t like to work with so I tend to use plugins that don’t require a theme edit or any vast changes to accomplish their use.

Thanks for the infos. Can I take a look at this site so that I can check if it doesn’t what I need.

Basically, I want to create a small MeetUp cum forum site.
