I am taking over a website for a friend to redesign and manage it with WordPress. I have built plenty of WordPress sites from the ground up but have never taken an existing domain to change it to WordPress. It’s also been a while since I’ve done one so I’m not sure if I ran in to this problem in the past. Anyways..

The domain name already exists and is active. Here is what I did:

    1. Set up new hosting with HostGator
    2. Installed WP using existing domain (installed in root domain folder)
    3. Changed nameservers to point to HostGator nameservers

Now, I just did this today, and the domain registrar said it could take up to 24 hours to effectively change the nameservers over. This seems like a long time to me for this process but… I realize the nameservers have not been changed over completely yet, but I still figured I could work on the WP site in the meantime. When I go to log in using http://www.domain.com/wp-admin I get this error:

“NOT FOUND – The requested URL /wp-admin was not found on this server.”

I’m assuming (hoping) that this simply means the nameserver process has not gone through yet, and I’ll just have to wait. But I wanted to ask around as I’m sure someone has had experience with this in the past.

Your help is much appreciated in advance!

Try 72 hours for the changes to fully propagate.

Nameservers can take up to 72 hours – it’s just how the internet works. Nothing you can do about it. See if hostgator can give you a temporary domain.

Trust me I know about waiting extended time periods for things like this (domain transfers etc.). However, in the past when I’ve changed DNS it has taken no more than 2 hours. This is why 24 hours seems like a long time to me.

Thanks for the input. It’s not that imminent really, I was just more curious whether I missed a step or didn’t do something correctly.
