WordPress database error: [MySQL server has gone away]

    I have been having problems with logging in and with publishing posts and keep getting the IE cannot display this page message. So I just upgraded to 2.8.6 and deactivated some of my puggins in an attempt to solve these problems. Still can’t post. Also tried using Notepad instead of Word as per advice I saw to others here.
    Now I’m also getting this error message:
    WordPress database error: [MySQL server has gone away]
    SELECT * FROM wp_users WHERE user_login = ‘admin’

    Can anyone give me some advice, please?
