I made some posts and assign them to different categories but a few days later, the categories disappear and all my posts are automatically placed in the Uncategorized category instead. I can't even create new categories.
I know this problem is not unique but I've googled the solutions and tried them and they don't work. I can't think what triggered it because I didn't even do any updating.

I'm having the same problem. Bump.
I have the same problem after upgrading to 2.6. In Manage>Categories screen I can only see the check box on the left and the number of the posts in each category on the right. No category name.
You can see WordPress Upgrade - Categories Empty / blank for 2 possible solutions

I had a new and hosted 2.5.1 installed a few days prior to 2.6 and cannot get beyond four categories plus the 'uncategorized'. So there obviously now are two WP versions that are not solidly implemented. For a non-coding user, what are the remedies? Any help? These glitches are not trivial.

If the solutions listed by patsar were too complicated or didn't work for you, check out this solution. It worked for me.
Hope it helps.
