Having an issue I can’t resolve that involves external access. Basically every feature of my WordPress installation that involves outside communication fails.

For example, on the dashboard RSS feeds, I get this:

RSS Error: WP HTTP Error: Couldn’t resolve host ‘wordpress.org’

When I try to search for plugins, I get this:

An unexpected error occurred. Something may be wrong with WordPress.org or this server’s configuration. If you continue to have problems, please try the support forums.

    The URL is bankruptcy-divorce/bankruptcy-blog

My server guy said it was probably related to cURL, so he said he enabled it, but I still have the same problem days later. I’ve installed Core Control, and have attached the shots from it.

    Please help!!

  • Your hosts may be blocking requests to external sites. Have you tried asking them about it?

Yeah, I asked him — he said he’s not, and he ping tested or something to make sure.

    Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of your current version of WordPress.

Yes, thank you. I’ve already tried all of the above. This is a fresh WordPress installation and it’s had difficulty from the get go.

I’m sorry but irrespective of what your host says, the issues you describe can only mean 1 of two things:

    1. PHP is not correctly configured on the server
    or
    2. The server is blocking requests to external sites.

OK, I will send this info to him. Would a php info page help me determine the problem. What should I look for in that information?

It might. It certainly wouldn’t hurt.

Should I post the content or the link, or would that information be too sensitive to post?

I wouldn’t suggest posting that kind of info on a public forum, no. I’ll ask around and see if I can find out if you need to have any specific PHP modules available to allow WP to access external sites & feeds.

    Thank you.

“Could not resolve hostname” means that your server does not have DNS resolution working. Basically, it’s either not setup correctly at the network level, or the DNS server it’s configured to talk to isn’t available.
