My website is broken. I am so distressed, please help me as quickly as possible.

    Here’s the problem:
    • WP did an auto-update from 3.8.1 to 3.8.2, which broke my website (NOT working now: all toggle functionality, some nice design elements, drop downs on main nav, posts not aggregating on home page)
    • I followed advice in the forum to download 3.8.1 again and ftp, replacing all the WP files. That did not restore my website.
    • I then followed @esmi’s instructions to delete all 3.8.1 files except wp content, htaccess and wp-config files and upload replacements from 3.8.2. This has not restored my website.

I need help with restoring my website to its former 3.8.1 glory.

    Please help help help.
    Thank you

And the other steps I suggested:

    – switching to the default theme by renaming your current theme’s folder inside wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin.

You need to do these before re-uploading the new copy of WP’s core files and re-running the upgrade.

er…these suggestions weren’t in the previous thread/response to my query.

I am new to WordPress and am very scared/nervous of all this now. I want to do this properly and understand what I am doing/why. I am quite confused.

switching to default theme? what will this do to the work i’ve done in my current theme? i don’t understand this instruction.

reset the plugins folder? to what specs? I don’t understand.
Can you pls give me clear & complete step-by-step instructions?

thank you @esmi. I appreciate your patience. I just need step-by-step guidance.

    thank you,

There is no magic bullet in these situations. This is just the start of basic troubleshooting – a process of elimination deliberately designed to locate the root cause as quickly as possible by first removing the most obvious and common culprits via a series of (often) temporary steps.

Your theme & plugin settings are saved in your database and should be retained for future use.

    couple questions:
    • once i re-upload the 3.8.2 files, do i remove “old” from the theme name? will the website appear in twentytwo (or whatever), instead of my theme?
    • you mentioned “re-running” the upgrade. After I re-upload the 3.8.2. files, do I need to activate or do something specific to “re-run”? or is FTPing all i need to do?

please let me know and I will get on all this stuff.

    let me know – thx-thx

once i re-upload the 3.8.2 files, do i remove “old” from the theme name?

Initially, no. Leave the default theme active.

will the website appear in twentytwo (or whatever), instead of my theme?

Yes – your site will be using the 2014 theme.

do I need to activate or do something specific to “re-run”?

In your browser navigate to http://your_domain/wp-admin/upgrade.php

    Hi @esmi,

All done. Now, my web url is a blank white page. All info is missing.

When I went to upgrade (http://your_domain/wp-admin/upgrade.php), the WP page said there was nothing to upgrade.

    What now?

Try checking your site’s error logs for a more specific error message. Your hosts should be able to help you accessing your site’s error logs.

The only message I am getting in my cpanel, error log is

    • file does not exist (for my favicon), and
    • file does not exist…public_html/robots.txt

    Nothing else.

    Does this make sense?

interestingly, my WP dashboard says that my site is running my purchased theme, not the default.

    is this a clue?

(I did rename my theme folder to “themename-old” in FTP.)

you mean besides the error log info i already got from my cpanel?
    • file does not exist (for my favicon), and
    • file does not exist…public_html/robots.txt

That’s going to take a day or two.

    Really?
