When in doubt and generally speaking it’s always a good idea to have a full backup before you update.

That’s why the first steps in that article begin with “Back up WordPress”. That way if you have some sort of catastrophic problem (you shouldn’t) then you’ll be able to put it all back the way it was before you upgraded.
Thanks for the hint! I was already searching for a good backup solution… did not find a good one though. I will check these ones out.
