Scenario:
1. I go to Plugin > Update Available (10)
/wp-admin/plugins.php?plugin_status=upgrade
2. I click "update automatically" on a compatible plugin that I want to update.
3. I click "Return to Plugins page"
4. I'm redirected to Plugins > All (20)
/wp-admin/plugins.php
5. I expect to be redirected back to Plugin > Update Available (9)

This doesn't sound like an Alpha-specific bug.
Would be appreciated if you could file a bug in Trac for this: http://codex.wordpress.org/Reporting_Bugs#Reporting_a_Bug
I don't know that it's a bug at all, I think just how we made it work. After installing/updating a plugin, the expectation is that someone would want to activate/configure it, not keep uploading plugins one by one since we have the bulk update function.
Yes, but what if someone wants to update only the plugins that are compatible to the current version of WP? They sure don't want to bulk update... they most probably choose to read the changelog before updating every plugin.
That's what I do:
I read the plugin changelog.
I make sure is compatible with the last version of WP.
I look in the forum for what others are saying...
I make the plugin update.
I verify the front end to see if the plugin is working well...
If something goes wrong I go back to the last plugin update and investigate.
Else I click again the "Update Available" and go to the next plugin in the list :)

Actually if the forums are any evidence, most people just bulk update without looking.
And the "best" day, like a life changing... is after a bulk update... you know... when you got some plugins conflict that eventually breaks down your site... bummer :)
Your first question in mind is: I wonder which one of this 10 plugins that I just updated is the guilty one? Well... start digging... time is ticking... :)
The other way around... when you update one by one... you lose more time but at least you know where to start the digging if you are in trouble... and probably ending up with an alternative plugin(s) and go on with your life... ;)
@Jane Wells, I agree with you... this (my ticket) is more like a enhancement request than a bug... no biggie :)
