Done a new install several times of WP3.1.4
When creating the network following the provided steps, I get to the point where it asks which type of network I want to create. No matter what I choose, the install button doesn;t return a new screen with the update instructions for the wp-config.php and the .htaccess.

Tested it first on a local install on MAMP with 3.2.1. There it worked perfectly fisrt time round.

    Apache is installes with ‘mod-rewrite’

I also notices that I can’t change the permalinks? The ‘save changes’ has no effect. Also no second screen or confirmation that the change has taken effect.

Any ideas whether this is ‘hosting’ or ‘file ownership’?

Why are you installing 3.1.4 anyway?

Does it work with 3.2 on your server?

Did Single Site work at all before hand?

    @ipstenu,
-Installing on 3.1.4 because hosting provider does not yet support php 5.2.4
-Therefore, 3.2 cannot yet run on my server (found this out when trying the install).
-Not quite sure what you mean by “did Single Site work…”. I get the default 2010 templated site up. Everything looks fine on the front-end.

    Redid the install this morning.
    I can add new pages/articles/posts.
I could not add picture/image, changed directory permisssions to 777, then it succeeded.
Again I can’t change the permalinks?? (No action when pushing ‘save changes’. The selection radio-button defaults back to the top. The blog keeps showing the unfriendly link structure).

I do have a Plesk environment on the server. Found this article the other day: http://www.ryanbelanger.com/?tag=wordpress

I tried to change the permissions/ownership as suggested but somehow the plesk environment and my FTP went haywire after that. Took 2 days for the hoster to get everything back.

Just curious if the ownership/permissions could have an influence on what I am doing right now?

I’m thinking moving to a new host would be far less work.

    Got a little further!

On my hosted server, even a single install (I also have another WP installation, my own website dntwebmedia.nl) is not able to create or re-/write the .htaccess file when the permalink structure is changed.

Redid the install on http://www.ecobagz.nl as a test.

My hosted environment is a Linux/Apache VPS with a Plesk panel.

I have also set directories and files with a “777” permission but to no avail. I can’t write or re-write the .htaccess

So, I installed the same 3.1.4 on my MAMP (MacBook) system and there it works like a charm. (Where I also developed my dntwebmedia.nl website and later ported it to the hosted environment with .htaccess and permalink structure according to my taste)

Whilst trying to change the group and proftp.conf files in the /etc/ folder to set a better group ownership to apache and different permissions on the folders upon upload by ftp, I have killed the Plesk environment for the second time (weird). My hoster is fixing it right now.

Conlusion: it’s got to be the hosted environment. Can’t yet figure out whats wrong though.

@andrea_r perhaps you’re right, however, how do I know the next hoster doesn’t have the same problems? Why can’t this hoster offer me the right service? Am I doing something wrong?

    MultiSite won’t work without .htaccess.

    Full stop.

You can TRY making it manually, but if that fails, then you need to kick your host in the kneecap and get a new one. And this time email them the suggested note from http://wordpress.org/about/requirements/ first.

    (@deetromp)

Yep, I can see that now “..won’t work without .htaccess”.

Making it manually and putting it there has no effect!

The question still remains, why is it not being created, why doesn’t WP read it when added manually, why can’t WP access it?

You’re not doing anything wrong. πŸ™‚ It is your host and you can find out info about php and htaccess files even before you sign up at a new host.

Are you calling the htaccess file .htacess ? It has to be that exactly.

    Spelling of .htaccess is correct.

Short Answer: Your host doesn’t understand how websites need to work in the 2010s.

This is NOT weird stuff. This is bog standard. Tell your host that .htaccess doesn’t work and ask if they can turn on Mod Rewrite.

    (@deetromp)

@ipstenu, thanks, That is what I thought too. My hosting provider called me early in the evening to tell me that they have looked into it. They now need to take me off-line and redeliver the VPS server.
Somehow rightsmanagement ha not been correctly implemented.
I will address the mod-rewrite issue as well.

Thanks for the help folks. At least I feel a little less stupid. This had nearly cost me a customer already.

Yeah… something is off on their end…
