WordPress 2.7 doesn’t send any emails

I have this problem that I have not been able to solve. I have searched the Support forums for a long time and nothing has been able to fix my problem.

I have a wordpress blog (2.7.1) set up on a shared hosted server (Swifthost.net is the host). It was a new fantastico installation. My problem is that no emails from WordPress are being received. This includes new user, new comment, and form plugin emails.

I have tried numerous smtp plugins with numerous different outgoing email addresses, but the result was the same: the error message read “Failed to connect to the server.” Using the php mail settings it says the email was sent successfully, but no email has ever made it to my inboxes or spamboxes.

Also, I have gone into wp_options in phpmyadmin and changed around the email settings but it was still unsuccessful.

All the proper setting checkboxes are checked. I use Google Apps for my emails and they work properly.

I am not sure where to go from here. I have searched google for hours but have not came up with a successful fix. Any assistance would be appreciated.
