word press theme files

I want to create a child file for my theme. To access the files of your theme, you need to be connected to your FTP (I’m assuming this is Filezilla). Once I am connected, how do I go about finding my directory of files so that I can add a new one?

Please help — I don’t even know if this question makes sense:)
