Word doc security risk?

I am working with someone who wishes to make MS Word forms — with “fillable” fields available to site visitors as a printable alternative to online versions of event registration forms. I know these can be uploaded to the media library, and linked to, but I am wondering if there are any security risks involved in using these forms (vs. PDF, for instance). (I’m recalling that WP didn’t use to allow upload of the .doc mime type.) The Word doc forms are created on someone else’s PC. Is there a better way to handle these forms than uploading them to the media directory? Would a download manager offer any protection? Many thanks!
