[resolved] Wisita Video Not Playing Inline on Facebook (16 posts)

    Hi JS,

    Looks like you stay on top of this support forum, thank you for that.

    I am trying to have my embeded video post show up as a video share on facebook with the video playable inline in the post.

    If you are not familiar with Wistia.com i would highly recommend checking it out. (video hosting for business). if you don't fall in love with them within 5 minutes I'll give you a pass on helping me out ;)

    Anyway, as you can see here in their docs, their videos can do that just like youtube and vimeo. from their instructions it looks like I need the OG tags in the post which is how I got to your plugin.

    Here is a sample post. testing it in the debugger shows the following:

    og:video:	Array of length 1
    {
       "url": "http:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/zia62jx4he",
       "type": "application\/x-shockwave-flash",
       "width": 760,
       "height": 428
    }

    Trying to post it on facebook just results in the image thumbnail showing up and not the video.

    Any guess as to why?

    Lol! Well, that's a good one... :) When I coded support for YouTube and Vimeo videos, I left the embed/iframe detection loose enough to cover more than just YouTube and Vimeo, but never really tested it. ;-)

    I'm glad to see that it worked out. :) The only problem I see is that there's no preview image. That code is very specific to each provider because it must make an API call to get the preview image URL, width and height. Some preview image URLs can get guessed at, like YouTube, but others can't.

    I checked the Wistia API docs, hoping it might be similar to YouTube and/or Vimeo, but it's different enough that it'll take more than 5 mins to code. ;-) For one thing, they require a password to access the API. That means (possibly) a new option in the settings. I'll have to ponder that addition...

    Anyway, aside from the preview image, I don't see what else might be preventing Facebook from embedding that video. Hm. Except, of course, if that webpage was shared on Facebook previously. Their pre-existing cache always wins, and trying to flush the cache using the Facebook Debugger doesn't work in that case (see the FAQ for more info).

    So, maybe try and new webpage (or permalink)?

    Cool. thanks for the quick and comprehensive answer.

    I'll try a new link and will also check with Wistia about it. They are very hands on. and perhaps integrating them more directly in the future would make sense (time and effort wise) for you as well.

    I'll report back.

    This is probably a Facebook issue -- their platform is very finicky...

    I sent an email to Wistia about the issue after doing a few tests. For example, this video *should* be embedded on Facebook, but it's not.

    https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/og/object?q=http%3A%2F%2Fadm.surniaulula.com%2F2013%2F07%2F25%2Fwistia-video-test%2F

    FYI - I just finished coding support for Wistia preview images. You can download the latest DEV version (6.4-dev2) from here:

    http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/nextgen-facebook.zip

    I was hoping the addition of a preview image might tip the scales, but it doesn't appear to have made any difference.

    Anyway, let's hope Wistia has some insight.

    Thanks,

    js.

    FYI - Looks like the problem may be with Wistia. Examples:

    https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/og/object?q=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube-nocookie.com%2Fembed%2FwMeVh8eoKsQ

    https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/og/object?q=http%3A%2F%2Ffast.wistia.net%2Fembed%2Fiframe%2Fwb36s0vwcg

    Notice the "Video embedding on Facebook enabled" for the Youtube video, but not the Wistia video. ;-)

    JS,

    I think someone should tell you, on a regular basis, that you are awesome.
    You are so on top of your stuff, it is inspiring... I can't believe you already added support for wistia. I just downloaded the 6.4 dev2.

    It looks like you are right. posting even direct wistia video urls does not produce the video embed despite the instructions in the docs and here too.

    Thanks for contacting wistia. this would even be helping them by letting them know their fb embeds no longer works.

    I'll wait to hear how this all unfold.

    keep up the awesome!

    I'm corresponding w Wistia by email. They have to make changes on their end, and I expect they'll provide a solution shortly. It sounds like the solution will be to use another URL, but some components of that URL are not available from the embed code, so we'll see what they suggest.

    Well, so far it's not looking good. Using the embed code, video ID, etc., there doesn't seem to be a way to get the *actual* Flash video URL. I can get a variety of information using the Wistia APIs, but not the Flash video URL, which Facebook needs. You'd think this would be an obvious bit of info to offer, but it appears to have been an oversight on their part. ;-)

    I'm going to mark this topic as resolved because this is not an NGFB issue. If Wistia offers the Flash URL based on the video ID at some point, I can include support for Wistia in NGFB, but as things are now, it doesn't look like that will be possible.

    Thanks,

    js.

    OMG, so Wistia got back to me -- and there's a way to do it, but it was a little more trouble than YouTube and Vimeo. For one thing, the info is behind a password protected API. :-/

    Download and install the latest DEV version from http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/nextgen-facebook.zip.

    Then see the section called "Why doesn't Facebook embed my videos from Wistia?" in the FAQ. ;-)

    Let me know how things go -- this should def fix the issue. :)

    Yeah I just heard back from them too.

    Turns out you can do it as is with their urls on videos that are in a project defined as Public/Unlocked. Tested it and that works.

    And sounds like to make embedded video on your site do the same requires what your described in the FAQ.

    However, after doing that, it doesn't work and when I put this link in fb debugger I get this message:

    Errors That Must Be Fixed

    Object Invalid Value: Object at URL 'http://www.alexafischer.com/let-the-party-begin/' of type 'article' is invalid because the given value 'http://embed.wistia.com/deliveries/6ee779f149971e095870c9f7c4779272c69d33a6.jpg?image_crop_resized=960x540' for property 'og:image:secure_url' could not be parsed as type 'url'.

    Is the ?image_crop thing at the end messing it up?

    p.s.
    although i don't have a need for twitter cards i'm buying the pro version just to support you. we need more devs like you making things happen.

    p.p.s
    your link to the pro version in the plugin backend links here and this link comes up broken

    Lol! Ok, no problem, small mis-communication w Wistia. embed.wistia.com in those URLs was supposed to be embed-0.wistia.com (according to them).

    Let me recode that part. ;-)

    Ok, try the latest DEV version -- it should be ok now.

    Also, the Pro version offers more than just Twitter Cards. The caching features are well worth it.

    I really gotta pump out a few more videos this week-end... :)

    Works. Like. Magic!

    What can I say. Awesomeness... Thank you.

    (and yeah, just saw the pro version has more than twitter cards, the per post controls are great!)

    Excellent - glad everything worked out.

    I should push out v6.4 later today.

    If you have any more issues or comments, start a new thread here or send me an email.

    Thanks,

    Question - do i have to by the PRO version to get the Wistia to embed inline on Facebook? I have your plugin, but there are no video tags (og:video)

    Support for Wistia video URLs is provided by the "Service APIs" in the Pro version. See the Quick List of Features for more info: http://wordpress.org/plugins/nextgen-facebook/
