I've started a couple of blogs with the example.com/postname structure and according to http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Permalinks#Structure_Tags it is not recommended for performance reasons.
This leaves me wondering about two things.
1. When do these possible performance reasons start to be noticed?
2. Will wordpress fix this bug?

I will edit that info in the codex as WP has long since fixed this to work with almost every server set up. You can use it safely if running a recent version of WP

It's still not edited in the codex though.
yes it has
Using only %postname%
If using version 2.0 or greater, the following is no longer true as this has been changed.
