Should you still make a child theme of twentyeleven if you want to customize it?
I see lots of people 'changing' it without the usual response of "make a child theme..do not edit twentyeleven".

Absolutely, without question, yes!

Not if I see them first. Twenty Eleven is now the default WordPress 3.2 theme. Having access to an unedited version of the default theme is absolutely vital when troubleshooting a range of site issues.
There will be upgrades for twentyeleven (and those probably soon), so it is not recommended to modify it. Use a child theme to do that.
I know I would but I was just asking for clarity.. and knowing now if I answer with that response I am not wrong.
For clarity: anyone making modifications to a Theme for which one does not control updates should always make those changes via Child Theme, or else fork the Theme.
Otherwise, all changes will be overwritten when the Theme is updated.
This is true for core-bundled Themes, Themes installed from the repository, or Themes obtained from third-party sites.
