Will there be native private messaging in wordpress soon? (10 posts)

I am really interested in letting my WP users send private mail to each other. I've noticed I'm not the only one. I realize there are a few plugins that add add this, but I hate to go the plugin route on something this big, that will make lots of database changes/additions.

So, I'm wondering if anyone knows if this is on the horizon for a future release of WordPress. Everything is so social now, frankl I'm surprised it's not in WP yet.

    Thanks.

Personally I am more in favor of the plugin route.

"Personally I am more in favor of the plugin route."

Why is that? Plugins are so much more problematic. Is it just because you are not interested in it?

I did a search here and on the web and it sure seems like it is highly desired. It's a great benefit to a site if users interact more, and having a PM function would allow more friendships to blossom, keeping people coming back.

    @slobizman

Because I might (would) not ever use it.
That is what I love about plugins.

Somebody might not ever use PM, and others might use it extensively. Plus if the technical side changes it is more to keep up to date in core. Where as with a plugin you can switch and replace the technology if enough people want it.

I got excited about Buddypress, until I saw that it only runs on MU.

Like mohitkr05 said, it will work in single WP in the future because codebases for single WP and WPMU will be merging soon and BuddyPress will become a sort of plugin.

Im with the person who says plugins ..

frankly, introducing more stuff thats already handled properly in plugins, OR can be handled by plugins properly dilutes the ability of wordpress developers to focus on making whats at the "core" of wordpress better.

Add theres plenty of room for improvement there.

Secondly, with every release wp gets fatter. more bloated. Even IF one were to go "ok lets put some plugin stuff into the core" .. why on earth would something so obtuse as private messaging ??

Plugins afford you to install what you want, and for me to install what I want.

I dont want private messaging, therefore if/when such plugin appears, I wont use it.

Buddypress is never the answer. It's bloated with code that should have been written using core code with extra database calls and inits that are unnecessary. Although I hear it's being cleaned up alot.

I would like to see a 3rd party plugin for this anyways so that core doesnt get inflated with something not everyone will use.
