• I administer several websites powered by WordPress. Up until now, I have had no problems using the rich text editor to write and manage posts for all of my sites. However, I found tonight that on one of my sites the RTE no longer worked. The tool bar appears as a series of text-labeled buttons, while the html appears in the text area. The RTEs still work fine on my other WordPress sites.

All of my sites use WP 2.0.4, I use Firefox, and I have not installed any plugins since this problem occured. I’m really stumped as to why it the RTE suddenly stopped working on one site, and why the others don’t seem to be having any problems.

    Thanks for your help,

    – Mark

  • So on the one giving you problems, head over to Users-> Your Profile.

Scroll to the bottom of the page.

Is “Use the visual rich editor when writing” checked?

Yes, the “use the visual rich editor when writing” box is checked. By the way, the editor appears the same when the box is not checked as when it is.

I have this problem on my site too.

I find that if I click ‘save and continue editing’ then the text and wysiwyg bar appear correctly.

Its a pain, but a workaround.

Unfortunately, that workaround did not work for me.

I’m really stumped by this; is there anything else that I possibly could have done to cause this? Does anyone think that a reinstall might fix the problem?

Maybe compare wp-include/js for all the blogs? Perhaps the one that’s acting up is missing bits there… (yes, I’m grasping).

A reinstall ofthe files (no need to redo the db) would be worth a shot I reckon.

    HandySolo:

Thanks for trying to help me out here. Is there any risk in trying to just write over the wp-include/js of the malfunctioning site with a copy of that directory from one of my other WP installs? If that doesen’t work I might try to reinstall WP; is there anything in particular that I should know before doing that?

If they’re the same versions of WP, no risk at all.

If that doesen’t work I might try to reinstall WP; is there anything in particular that I should know before doing that?

Unfortunately it needs to be repeated ad nauseum: Follow the ‘delete old files first’ procedures for re-installs/upgrades.
