I should add that widgets show up fine on the front page of another blog of mine (http://julian-richards.co.uk/old-work/) that uses the same child theme of Twenty Twelve. This blog, though, is part of a site with several pages. Somehow this seems to make a difference.

Problem solved! My second post above was wrong – it was my child theme’s front page template that was causing the problem. It turns out that if your theme has a front page template in it and your site is a simple blog, and therefore has no pages, it will automatically use the front page template on the front page. I just had to rename the child theme front page template template file (I put my initials at the front) and then the front page I was trying to fix simply used the standard Twenty Twelve layout (which includes widgets).

On the site where I did want to use my custom layout, clever WordPress continued to recognise the template I wanted to use, despite the changed file name.
