Widget to Output WooCommerce Product Thumbnails Only

I want a widget that outputs recent products thumbnails only, in a grid using the themes product archive layout css.

What is the best approach to achieve this or is there already something out there that does this?

What I’ve started so far:

I’ve created a basic site specific plugin, activated it, and have a basic widget set up but I don’t know exactly what code to place in the widget area to output the thumbnails.

It seems a plugin like this would be very useful for plenty of people. Maybe have a setting in the widget that can set number of thumbnails output and by filter; recent, featured etc.
